Caught up in words Good afternoon everyone. I've been a little busy, mainly occupying a lot of my free time and sleep time to read. I like reading because it keeps my mind occupied, it goes on for a long time (unlike movies that last about 2 hours) and words describe many things that images can't. So anyway I've finished the divergent trilogy. I shall eat my words on saying that divergent sucks and I hated the book. I wouldn't say I love it. Summarized story line of divergent trilogy. 5 factions work together to form a society, with each of them having a certain characteristic to uphold certain jobs. However there are people who have a mixture of characteristics (divergents) and end up not having 1(the best choice for them) faction. Many of the divergents end up getting killed or dropping out of the factions. 1 faction (erudite) began to want to take over the entire society and had another faction (dauntless, trained as security and police force) under control, by injecting mind control serums, to kill the current governing faction(abnegation). Divergents, however, were immune to this serum and led to the main characters(tris and Tobias), being divergents, to stop the slaughtering of abnegation. Many lives were lost in this hostile takeover. tris and a few others managed to stop it but this action made them fugitives. Soon after tris and her friends found out that the erudites wanted to become the governing faction because of a video sent from the 'outside' ( outside of the city). allies between other factions stopped erudites taking over and the factionless became the governing faction. Another group of rebels rose up against the factionless (allegiant). A few members of allegiant were chosen to be sent out if the city to investigate the video from the 'outside' (Tris and Tobias included) and they found out that their city and many others are experiments of genetics deficiencies and the divergents are people who have 'healed genetics'. The bureau that controls the experiments soon wanted To wipe off the memories of people in tris's city to reset the experiment. With that, another group of rebels were formed to stop this from happening. They were successful but tris died in the process but the world became a better place. I started reading divergent because I watched the movie and I liked it. A few of my friends were reading it and those who read it raved about how good it was. To me, The first book was kind of a disappointment. It didn't describe many things I was hoping to read in which I saw from the movie. Honestly, divergent kind of bore me. I continued reading insurgent(second book) as my friend told me that divergent barely scratched the surface of the whole storyline. Insurgent was better, I finished the book in a day and went on with allegiant. Both books are better than divergent itself. (Probably because the movie isn't out so there weren't any expectations) When I think back at the entire experience of the trilogy, I would say the storyline is good. There is a lot of action packed into the books but overall, did it bore me? Unfortunately, yes. When I say bore. I don't mean like I was BORED while reading. It just doesn't surprise me or gave me a sense of unexpectance. I mean while you do not predict the book on what is going to happen next, you don't get surprised on what the story brings you to. It's always about fighting, action, fighting about this cause, standing up against the leaders, planning for a take down, fails, fight and of course, fight again. A little intimacy in between here and there too. I did however like that fact that (spoiler alert) tris died. Don't get me wrong that I liked her dying. But in terms of content because it's surprising, in most books, the main characters never die. This would probably make a good movie though because firstly, it's very much like the hunger games. I haven't read the book but I guess the movie portrayed tris and katniss rather similarly and people like that. there is a lot of action and I guess many movie goers like that. On top of that, who doesn't like a strong young girl who would stand up for what she believes it, right? I do believe that if a third movie comes out and tris dies in the screens, many people would weep for her, including me. I do see why there are many fans of the book but I guess it's just not really 'my kind of book'. Personally I LOVE the trilogy of 'the girl with the dragon tattoo', books that pretty much leave you mind blown by the unexpected links and shows you the whole story of the book only at the END of the story. (You're probably pretty much lost while at the front) Any such books to recommend? Please do take note that the entire thoughts on the book are solely based on my personal opinions and I hope I won't be stepping on toes of fans. We all have different preferences. That pretty much sums this post up so.. Bye! |
