Why do people not help a stranger in need? Walk down the streets and someone falls or drops something. Does anyone help? Sometimes we watch videos of these situations and can't help but wonder why is it that no one helps? Im a strong believer of pay it forward but I must admit that sometimes it's hard to react quickly to help someone. Once my friend and I were in a mall and she saw one lady lying on the ground and she immediately ran towards her with a bottle of ointment in her hand to offer her. I was surprised, how on earth does one react so damn quickly! People around were just walking by.. Like there's nothing Bless her I do try my best to help people around as I knew that if I were them, I would love to have someone help me too. Mostly I just assist elderly in crossing roads. I've spoken to many regarding this issue before and frankly I think society has made people belonging to it selfish and self centered. I don't blame people who choose not to offer a hand to others in need Why do people stop helping one another? You don't know them One night I was going home, it was late at night and saw a china couple nearby, the girl was drunk, puking all over herself (and the guy) and she was just lying there. I went to ask the guy if everything was alright and went home to get a bottle of hot water and a box of tissues for them. My older brother and father asked me why I did that. 'You don't know them, it's dangerous' Yeah, maybe the guy made the girl this way intentionally? I wouldn't know. Fear of rejection Honestly it's pretty embarrassing sometimes when you offer to help and get rejected. Especially in a crowded area. My friend ran over to the lady and offer her ointment. Everyone was looking at her and the guy beside the lady just politely rejected her saying something like she's okay. Doesn't look very good right? Assholes taking advantage of kindness of others. When I was in secondary school, my friend and I were around bugis area and an old man came over and started speaking to us. I couldn't make out what language it was (too many dialects in Singapore) so I tried my best to help him. My friend was pulling me away but I didn't understand why I shouldn't help him (she's from china, I'll explain why many Chinese people are more adverse to helping others). I was trying my best and as he was a lot shorter than I am, i would bend down to talk to him and stand back up straight and ask my friend if I needed to ask her smth. I stood up straight and suddenly the old man grabbed my chest and walked away. Yes. I just got molested while helping an old man. WHAT COULD I DO? Nothing. He was so old, he has a bad case of hunched back and was limping. I can't possible slap him right? And it didn't feel right to report him as well. Also, I'm pretty sure we all haven't forgotten about the wang yue incident. 'A van hit a 2-year-old little girl and then fled. No passersby reached out to help and then another car ran over her. Over the span of 7 minutes, a total of 17 people passing by failed to extend a hand or call the police, up until the 19th person, a garbage scavenger [older woman], who lifted her up after discovering her but the little girl in her arms was like a noodle, immediately collapsing back onto the ground. The trash scavenger called for help, and the little girl’s mother, who was in the vicinity, immediately rushed over and rushed her to the hospital.' It shocked the world and many people started criticizing the Chinese. But I don't blame them. At all. There are many cases in china in which someone being friendly to a stranger ends up being a victim. Stolen items, robbed, accused and even stealing of a baby and kidnapping. Article of wangyue can be read here http://www.chinasmack.com/2011/videos/2-year-old-chinese-girl-ran-over-by-van-ignored-by-18-bystanders.html Under the comments you can see people criticizing and also people who say they understood. One comment stood out and fully explains why people in china would not help someone in need '"nanjing judge" refers to the infamous 2006 case of a man named Peng Yu who helped a woman to the hospital after she had fallen only to have the old woman accuse him of knocking her down. The Nanjing judge in that case ultimately ruled that common sense dictated that only the person who hit her would take her to the hospital, setting a precedent that continues only further discourages and reinforces many Chinese people's wariness to help others in similar situations.' It's not a one-time case of something like that. Can you imagine if you were to help someone In an accident and in turn get used, having to pay for her medical fees and maybe allowance for her entire life . I wouldn't help too. Chinapore With that, maybe that's why people just stop helping each other anymore is exactly because of this. It's no secret that there are LOTS of people from china in Singapore. (Hence, chinapore) very sad that we have lost our own culture. Nevertheless i still do believe in paying it forward and one day, you may receive help when you need it. It would make a world a much much happier place. Friday, May 30, 2014

Caught up in words Good afternoon everyone. I've been a little busy, mainly occupying a lot of my free time and sleep time to read. I like reading because it keeps my mind occupied, it goes on for a long time (unlike movies that last about 2 hours) and words describe many things that images can't. So anyway I've finished the divergent trilogy. I shall eat my words on saying that divergent sucks and I hated the book. I wouldn't say I love it. Summarized story line of divergent trilogy. 5 factions work together to form a society, with each of them having a certain characteristic to uphold certain jobs. However there are people who have a mixture of characteristics (divergents) and end up not having 1(the best choice for them) faction. Many of the divergents end up getting killed or dropping out of the factions. 1 faction (erudite) began to want to take over the entire society and had another faction (dauntless, trained as security and police force) under control, by injecting mind control serums, to kill the current governing faction(abnegation). Divergents, however, were immune to this serum and led to the main characters(tris and Tobias), being divergents, to stop the slaughtering of abnegation. Many lives were lost in this hostile takeover. tris and a few others managed to stop it but this action made them fugitives. Soon after tris and her friends found out that the erudites wanted to become the governing faction because of a video sent from the 'outside' ( outside of the city). allies between other factions stopped erudites taking over and the factionless became the governing faction. Another group of rebels rose up against the factionless (allegiant). A few members of allegiant were chosen to be sent out if the city to investigate the video from the 'outside' (Tris and Tobias included) and they found out that their city and many others are experiments of genetics deficiencies and the divergents are people who have 'healed genetics'. The bureau that controls the experiments soon wanted To wipe off the memories of people in tris's city to reset the experiment. With that, another group of rebels were formed to stop this from happening. They were successful but tris died in the process but the world became a better place. I started reading divergent because I watched the movie and I liked it. A few of my friends were reading it and those who read it raved about how good it was. To me, The first book was kind of a disappointment. It didn't describe many things I was hoping to read in which I saw from the movie. Honestly, divergent kind of bore me. I continued reading insurgent(second book) as my friend told me that divergent barely scratched the surface of the whole storyline. Insurgent was better, I finished the book in a day and went on with allegiant. Both books are better than divergent itself. (Probably because the movie isn't out so there weren't any expectations) When I think back at the entire experience of the trilogy, I would say the storyline is good. There is a lot of action packed into the books but overall, did it bore me? Unfortunately, yes. When I say bore. I don't mean like I was BORED while reading. It just doesn't surprise me or gave me a sense of unexpectance. I mean while you do not predict the book on what is going to happen next, you don't get surprised on what the story brings you to. It's always about fighting, action, fighting about this cause, standing up against the leaders, planning for a take down, fails, fight and of course, fight again. A little intimacy in between here and there too. I did however like that fact that (spoiler alert) tris died. Don't get me wrong that I liked her dying. But in terms of content because it's surprising, in most books, the main characters never die. This would probably make a good movie though because firstly, it's very much like the hunger games. I haven't read the book but I guess the movie portrayed tris and katniss rather similarly and people like that. there is a lot of action and I guess many movie goers like that. On top of that, who doesn't like a strong young girl who would stand up for what she believes it, right? I do believe that if a third movie comes out and tris dies in the screens, many people would weep for her, including me. I do see why there are many fans of the book but I guess it's just not really 'my kind of book'. Personally I LOVE the trilogy of 'the girl with the dragon tattoo', books that pretty much leave you mind blown by the unexpected links and shows you the whole story of the book only at the END of the story. (You're probably pretty much lost while at the front) Any such books to recommend? Please do take note that the entire thoughts on the book are solely based on my personal opinions and I hope I won't be stepping on toes of fans. We all have different preferences. That pretty much sums this post up so.. Bye! Thursday, May 8, 2014
A little supper tip You know there are days when you wanna have supper and yet too lazy to change out or step out of the comfort of your abode. Or days that you just wanna be home, slurping on some instant noodles. WELL here's a tip and it's really good. We all know the Korean instant ramen 'shin' right? If you don't just google shin ramen. It's so good. The soup is good the noodles is good. I'm not sure if there's anything not good about it. Back in the days of my poly years (happy sigh) we go drinking or clubbing or just staying out late and when we get home, we would get on MSN, or whatsapp and start chatting. And when someone starts with the shin eating, everyone else would mot be able to resist it. So do whatever you wanna do with your noodles, throw your vegetables, egg, cheese tofu, sausages, fishball or fish cakes whatever. Do your normal cooking. The secret only comes in AFTER. And that is pouring it in a bowl, lay some cheese on top of it, cover the bowl with a plate and wait a few minutes for it to melt. If you're lazy like me, and opt the microwave method to cook your ramen, just pause at the last 30 seconds to put your cheese. Results are almost the same. Please don't judge it's looks cause it's so so SO good. Try it!
